How Much Water Do We Use?
The average Canadian uses 329 litres of water per day, and 30% of that use is from your toilet (Statistics Canada, 2016). That is 36,025 litres of water per year down the toilet! To put that into perspective for you, that’s 9006 4L milk jugs. Wow, right? The city has a Toilet Rebate in Nanaimo to replace wasteful toilets with low-flow units.
Following our topic last week on hot water heater rebates, this week we’re talking about toilet rebates. The City of Nanaimo has renewed its Toilet Rebate program. This is to encourage people to change out their inefficient, pistachio green, 80s toilets. Just a disclaimer, I have nothing against pistachio green, but I do like conserving water. Many homes have older toilets that use 13 litres or more per flush. The new snazzy toilets only use 4.1 litres of water. That’s nearly 1/3 less water wasted (City of Nanaimo, 2018).
The Toilet Rebate.
Now, if saving the environment really isn’t your thing, maybe saving money is, the City of Nanaimo has renewed its toilet rebate program for 2019. The City of Nanaimo is currently offering a $50 credit to either your user rates (if you live in a single family home) or to your city taxes (if you live in a strata). This is to encourage people to change out their old toilets to the low flow toilets. Combine the savings on your city water bill with $50 back for swapping out your old toilet, and it makes sense.
Are Low-Flow Toilets as Good?
A common complaint that I hear about the low-flow toilets is that they don’t flush as good. Toilet manufacturers have come a long in terms of technology since 2002. Toilet tech has evolved and many low-flow toilets perform as good, if not better than their pistachio coloured ancestors, so no need to fret if it will take on what you need it to.
